Mass Screening in Modified Gravity

چکیده

Models of modified gravity introduce extra degrees of freedom, which for consistency with the data, should be suppressed at observable scales. In the models that share properties of massive gravity such a suppression is due to nonlinear interactions: An isolated massive astrophysical object creates a halo of a nonzero curvature around it, shielding its vicinity from the influence of the extra degrees of freedom. We emphasize that the very same halo leads to a screening of the gravitational mass of the object, as seen by an observer beyond the halo. We discuss the case when the screening could be very significant and may rule out, or render the models observationally interesting. E-mail: [email protected] E-mail: [email protected]

Local stability criterion for self-gravitating disks in modified gravity

We study local stability of self-gravitating fluid and stellar disk in the context of modified gravity theories which predict a Yukawa-like term in the gravitational potential of a point mass. We investigate the effect of such a Yukawa-like term on the dynamics of self-gravitating disks. More specifically, we investigate the consequences of the presence of this term for the local stability of t...

Distinguishing Dark Matter from Modified Gravity

Dynamical mass discrepancies in galaxies have two possible explanations: the existence of large amounts of dark matter or the breakdown of Newtonian gravity. True dark matter halos of galaxies could differ in several respects from apparent halos inferred from misinterpreted modified gravity, and we discuss two observational tests to probe these differences. Modified gravity gives generic, geome...

Environmental screening of dark matter haloes in f (R) gravity

In certain theories of modified gravity, Solar system constraints on deviations from general relativity (GR) are satisfied by virtue of a so-called screening mechanism, which enables the theory to revert to GR in regions where the matter density is high or the gravitational potential is deep. In the case of chameleon theories, the screening has two contributions – selfscreening, which is due to...

Unscreening Modified Gravity in the Matter Power Spectrum.

Viable modifications of gravity that may produce cosmic acceleration need to be screened in high-density regions such as the Solar System, where general relativity is well tested. Screening mechanisms also prevent strong anomalies in the large-scale structure and limit the constraints that can be inferred on these gravity models from cosmology. We find that by suppressing the contribution of th...

How to Simulate the Universe in a Box? Testing Modified Gravity with a N-body Simulation Code

In this paper we present preliminary results from cosmological simulations of modified gravity in the dark matter sector. Our results show improvements over standard cold dark matter cosmology. The abundance of low-mass haloes in the modified gravity model fit observations better than the conventional theory, while the differences of the modified density fluctuation power spectrum differs from ...
